Dahlings, it was the 1940’s. For half the decade the world was at war and then it was recovery time. Days were hard, but Hollywood kept us entertained with escapist Movie Star Glamour.
Whether a promotion for an actor or a movie, the studios spared nothing. Katherine Hepburn made wearing wide leg pants éclat. Here, in Hepburn style palazzos, is Art Director Rebecca!
Thank you Rene! Although, in the only actual copy of a gown here today, you give Ava Gardner in “The Killers” a run for her money. Now, let’s get on with it! First out on the catwalk is AGM Gigi.
Inspired by Betty Grable, Gigi is bewitching in this Art Gowns original.
There’s no mistaking the influences of Marlene Dietrich & Rita Hayworth in Marina’s one of a kind design. Such vintage beauty!
AGM Dale is dazzling in her rendition of a Carmen Miranda gown.
Veronica Lake broke many a heart when she covered one eye with her hair. AGM Holly is also a heartbreaker in this gold lame gown.
Last out on the runway, in the spirit of Loretta Young – Shey surrounds and spellbinds us wth romantic glory.

Meanwhile, in the dark back of the theatre, lusted Rupert Valentino. A wanna be Matinee Idol (no relation to Rudolph), sent by DracGoth (13th cousin) to abscond with SheyGoth to Erebos. There a diabolic plan to free DracGoth & Etagloc from the SheyGoth effigy was being hatched.

Unable to control his greed, Rupert Valentino sent AGMs Dale and Gigi along with Shey. No one saw backstage, as the 3 faded into the darkness of Erebos.
Not being the sharpest spoon in the drawer, Rupert unknowingly also sent a past memory of Resa’s tree into Erebos. Resa’s tree instantly sent a message to RR & PBH’s Tangle-Heart

Oooh. I loved this. Your gowns are fabulous, Resa. You outdid yourself. I love the “incomplete” aspect on some of them. Is that new, or have you always left little areas undrawn? So, the undrawn areas is a fashion illustration technique.
The only art lessons I ever had were in college. Once a week for 2 years we had “Fashion Illustration”.
It was almost gone with the wind at that point.
It was a course for those who wanted to draw for fashion magazine or newspaper ads.
There’s quite a history here.
Even at the advent of photography, it was a daring and expensive proposition to print photos in a magazine. Fashion designs and ads were drawn.
It was largely gone by the 80’s. Still, there were a lot of fab illustrations in Vogue, etc. in the70’s.
I learned that if you can’t quite get the mechanics of all of the body, but you have a great one side… you don’t need the other side. Fade/fake it out!
The same applies to lighting. Which is my demon at this juncture.
I’m still learning. However my background is not still life or life drawing. It is illustration.
You are a gem, Diana! I hope you will be as thrilled with the drawings of Aster that I am now embarked upon! xx

Hi Resa, I love your designs in this post and the whole spirit of the fashion show. The article you shared is interesting. I had no idea you hand sewed all your gowns. That is wonderful and amazing. I had sewed a dress once for a school project, we didn’t own a machine so I didn’t know what else to do. It was a lot of work, I remember it clearly. Bravo to you!

I decided the Art Gowns had to do something for the environment, sewing by hand is part of that.

Resa – I am very very late to this party, which is the most glamorous event that I have ever attended. You are a master of style whether in the 1940’s or in the 2020’s. You brought out memories for me of Ava Gardner, Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth, Grace Kelly Ingrid Bergman, and Doris Day. These women were fearless in fashion and in life. When I wear my palazzo pants, I feel connected to Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and my favouite – Katharine Hepburn!

We were in Ottawa this past week and found ourselves in a huge snowstorm. We made it back to Vancouver earlier this week, landing just a few hours before they closed the airport. We are expecting more snow tonight and advisories are out telling us to stay indoors and off the roads. We usually have a green Christmas, but this year we will be able to sing, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas”
