Midnight Nightingale

One enchanted evening I was inspired to make a performance Art Gown for the spellbinding Soprano, Charlotte Hoather.

She embraces the concept that Art Gowns are hand sewn from off cuts, repurposed clothes, curtains, table cloths, etc. and NOS (new old stock).

Charlotte lives in the U.K., and I wouldn’t be able to fit her. So, she sent me professionally taken measurements from an opera wardrobe department. I used those to make small adjustments to Judy.

Although I’ve made many gowns, and have history designing in film and television; presenting for stage is different.

Day shots were in natural light.  Night shots were lit. I can’t compete with stage lighting, especially overhead lighting. That would bring out the dazzle on the skirt’s circular tail, as it sits on the floor.

Midnight Nightingale is presented in a way I hope you can imagine what stage lighting could make happen.

I sent Charlotte a photo of an off cut of sequin fabric someone had gifted me. It was thrown on Judy with a stretch velvet piece, to show the germ of an idea. Called “Dragon Skin”, the sequins are variegated green/blue. Also, one can rub the sequins backwards and they flip to black. Funny, but once I got going, that novelty wore off.

A bustier shape was draped on Judy, then transferred to a paper pattern. That was used to cut the Dragon Skin. A decent yardage of 25 year old NOS plum acetate satin was pulled from the stash, and a 3 panel a-line(ish) skirt was cut. A full circle of $2.00/yd., 120″ wide liquidated black curtain sheer was draped on top.

The stretch velvet was used for the back & straps of the bustier. The thought was that it would be easier for fit and altering. A separating zip was inserted in the centre back. The gown’s finishes were designed to accommodate alterations.

Circles were cut out of the remaining Dragon Skin, and sewn onto the circular tail of the skirt.

A small bustle with a long thin nightingale tail, on its own waistband, is added separately to the top and skirt.

The gown can be worn with or without the bustle/nightingale tail. Teeny rhinestones (a gift from a friend) dot it and fill in between the sequin circles on the skirt’s tail.

Midnight Nightingale’s circular skirt tail can be hitched up, with or without the bustle/nightingale tail, for various effects.

Last I knew, Charlotte was practicing to be a Coloratura Soprano. She may be there already. Below is a fantastic performance.

I’m totally in love when Charlotte sings and George plays piano.

Charlotte, her star rising, is in rehearsals for a new Opera, “Brontë“.

In three pieces, Midnight Nightingale is glamorous and versatile. Above, the top is shown with a vintage navy panné velvet skirt.

Charlotte will look stunning in the magnificent Midnight Nightingale. She must be over the moon seeing the photos of her gorgeous gown. You are such a refreshing, sweet and beautiful person in these days of “Me! Me! Me!”, Resa. You make the world a better place.

    1. Dear Tim,
Thank you for your lovely comment!
I truly hope Charlotte loves Midnight Nightingale..
She sent really great professional measurements, and they were quite close to Judy’s.
I did trouble shoot all possible alterations, and design finishes to accommodate.

I am truly honoured by “You make the world a better place.”
What an incredible thing to have someone say.
Yes, in making Art Gowns out of superfluousness, I am using potential land fill, and creating art.
I’ve hoped that Art Gowns would contribute to the idea that new art, of any ilk, does not need to rob earth of its dwindling resources.
Still, I see you mean more than that. For that I am humbled, and yeah…. pleased!
      xoxoxo

      1. Tim is a great pal. He will be helping me with the cost of shipping the gown to you. We need to chat about that later! I’ve started looking at boxes, and thinking on best ways to pack it! ❦❦

    1. Thank you Merril!
This gown took longer than the others, but there were many issues I don’t normally have to deal with. Fit was a huge one.
I never liked opera, until I heard Charlotte sing, and got to know her through blogging. Contemporary rock was pretty much my music world.

A world of the arts has exposed itself to me, through the many creatives who blog.
Your rich poetry is high on my list of faves.

      1. You’re welcome.
Yes, I can imagine the fitting was more difficult from afar.
I don’t know much about opera. I know Candide because it’s Leonard Bernstein, and I’ve seen the show. More operetta perhaps. .

        Thank you!

  2. The Midnight Nightingale is fantastic and I am sure Charlotte will look marvelous while wearing it, onstage or off. (After watching the videos of her performance, I might have to track down “Some Enchanted Evening” since I have been humming it since your opening line…). I am sure Charlotte will love it and I hope she blesses us with some photos, or a video of a performance in it.
I hope you are relaxing after letting your nightingale fledge and are having a fabulous weekend 🙂

    1. Thank you, Trent!
Yes, Midnight Nightingale has fledged. What a great way of putting it!

It would definitely be a joy to see Charlotte in it! Hopefully MN will fit Charlotte. I did design finishes with alterations in mind. If it doesn’t work for performing in, it would be fabulous in a photo shoot. Things don’t have to fit perfect in that case. There are many ways to cheat a camera.

“Some Enchanted Evening”, I know that song somehow from my youth. I just looked it up. It’s from the musical “South Pacific”. “the single biggest popular hit to come out of any Rodgers and Hammerstein show.”
Oodles of singers have recorded it.
Anyway, thank you for this fab comment, and you have a great weekend, too!

      (Hey… maybe you’ll do a thing with S.E.E.!)

            1. I agree.
Then the more I see from way up there, the more I am inspired to create. The arts are a great part of life. We are fortunate to be able to partake! 🙂🙂

      1. One thing I need to add to my last comment about studying other’s works is how much I really like how you revel in the art work of others, be it a street artist or an opera singer. Your enthusiasm in infectious 🙂 And it means more because of how much talent you yourself have, which you’ve really shown us today with the wonderful Midnight Nightingale!!

        1. OMG!
What a wonderful thing to say, Trent!
I do revel in the arts. You just reminded me that my tagline on Glam is “Luxuriating in the arts”.
I’ve always had this …. cartoon vision, if you will……. of lying, luxuriating in a giant bubble bath. Except the bubbles are music, design, painting, dance, writing, sculpture et al.
Thank you for this confirming comment!
          ❦❦❦

    2. It is so nice to have been involved in one of Resa’s wonderful art gowns as the creation developed and has as you said fledged from sketch to gown, I do love it I’m thrilled it’s like a mermaid meets the Queen of the Night. I loved your song suggestion and its now on my list of songs from the movies to learn for concerts.
      Best wishes
      Charlotte

      1. I didn’t think of the Queen of the Night, though I should have – very appropriate.
Ah, the song – Resa started her post with “One enchanted evening” and there is no way I can read that and not have that song pop up in my mind! I think it is usually for baritone, but there may be soprano versions. In my opinion, though, if you want a song from South Pacific, Bali Ha’i is the one for you. Very mysterious and magical, as far from the Queen of the Nights aria in temperament as possible, but special in it’s own way.

    1. Thank you!

The skirt, yes, it was inspired by a photo from a friend who sends me pics of gowns. She’s the only person I know who loves gowns the way I do.
The thing about gowns, not tight ones made out of stretchy fabric, is that cut and drape are everything.
Cutting and draping are becoming lost art crafts.
Cripes, threading a needle and sewing on buttons are almost lost crafts. 🙂 🙂

      1. It is a shame how crafts can be lost from generation to generation. To have someone master a craft and then have that knowledge fade away.
        But again, beautiful dress.

      2. I agree with you Resa about cut and drape do you get the Great British Sewing Bee in Canada? When they get the cut and drape wrong boy does it go wrong. You’d be great on that show, you’d just walk away with the first prize 🏆.

        1. Ohh, no we don’t get the “Great British Sewing Bee” here!
LOL! I’d love to walk away with a first prize!
I have to go for 10 minutes, but I love all these incoming comments from you Charlotte!
You are the “Bee’s Knees”! ❦❦

    1. Dear John,
      Inhale…. exhale …. inhale … exhale..
You know I love kidding around wth you!
Seriously, thank you for the lovely compliment!
Perhaps we will get to see Charlotte in it. I will be sending it to her. Of course… will it fit?
Time will tell, and nonetheless, I am thrilled about having done this project.
      OX OX

              1. Uh huh!
                Cucumbers, eh?
Pretty cool extension to the love line-up, I’d say.
I’m going to leave it there, do some dishes, make a coffee and head to your blog. There I intend to pick up the fest!

        1. Hahaha! You are so funny!
Hey, if it’s big, and you have to eat more pie, then you might get as big as many of the big Soprano Divas. (As opposed to being a smaller Soprano Diva).
          That should scare them! ❦❦
And Yes, Charlotte, I am thrilled. ❦❦

  3. Dear Resa, your creations are breathtaking, Nightingale is gorgeous and I can only imagine the time and love you’ve put into this amazing gown. I’m awed by this beauty and can visualize it on beautiful And talented Charlotte. I’ve been waiting to see this gown and I’m blown away by this fantasy of a gown. Congratulations on the lovely finished gown. You are as perfect as your craft. Sending so much love and many hugs to you!
    ❤️🤗❤️

    1. Dear Meece Holly,

Yes, you waited patiently for this gown to be finished.
You are a joy and a fabulous support to my creative endeavours.
I’ll bet Charlotte thought it would never be done.
I hope it fits, but even if it doesn’t, it’s versatile enough to take on another life.
It’s always such a shock to be finished an Art Gown. They are a daily part of my life for a long while, then…. not.

Okay… a bit of a drawing break is in order! I’m so excited about the Go-Go Gala!
Much love to you!. Oh, and watch out for the hugs! They tend to fall out of the sky!
      xo❤️🤗❤️ox

      1. Dear Meece, That gown and Charlotte and you should be on the cover of Communication Arts Magazine ( and Vogue). It’s spectacular and so unique. Yay for Go-Go Gala , it’s going to be awesome .
        Running for a hugs 🤗 basket 🧺 , I dont won’t to miss any.
        ❤️🐭🐭❤️

      1. You will, Charlotte!
Once you see it in real life, you will know the right performance, the right stage, right lighting, etc.
Your gown in “Glitter and be Gay”, is perfect for the song and venue.
The gown overtakes the entire orchestra, as does your voice.
If anyone knows how and where to wear a gown, you do! ❦

    1. Thank you, Gi!
I’m looking forward to sending it to her.
Hopefully it will fit, or a least after a few alterations.
      We’ll find out soonish.
It’s always a thrill to finish an Art Gown! xxxxxxx

  4. Resa – Midnight Nightingale is stellar and shines with scintillating glamour on your judy. The vision of Charlotte on stage with Midnight Nightingale gives me goosebumps. I can only imagine the hours of work the went into this artgown. Truly a labour of love. Your detailed worked is exquisite. Thank you for your compassionate voice and creative energy. Your contributions make the world a more beautiful place. Your commitment to using repurposed materials inspires us all. The environment thanks you and so do I! This is my second time here and will be coming back again.

    1. Aww, Thank you Marc!
Yes, Midnight Nightingale was a big deal.
I’m satisfied now, for a bit.
We’ll see how this works on Charlotte!
I’m taking a big gown break for awhile, and will be drawing a lot.
Then when the itch returns, I’ll begin the next Art Gown.
It will be dedicated to Dale.
The fabrics are already picked out.
I’m thrilled you’ve seen Midnight Nightingale, and like her.
      MUAH!

  5. Oh my, dahling you amaze me! You have created such a breathtaking beauty for Charlotte, the Nightingale… Midnight Nightingale is also such a fitting name!
I look forward to see her wearing it! You have truly captured her spirit!
Tim said it: you make the world a better place!
Exquisite art, from concept to every tiny detail!
    Bravo, dahling!
    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

      1. That sounds perfect, Charlotte and I can just picture you! Wow!
I know exactly what you mean about feeling like Christmas Eve!
I’m overjoyed for both of you gifted girls! Love and many hugs! xoxoxo

    1. Thank you Janet!
I (through Art Gowns) want everyone to know that we can make beautiful, interesting, meaningful, etc.. things, art, whatever out of what we have already taken out of the earth.
New sourcing and extraction is not always the way to go anymore.
      Thank you for seeing that!!!

    1. Thank you, Liz!
I can hardly wait for her to see it! I know she’s in rehearsals, and it’s demanding of her time.
Yeah, the fit, alterations and versatility took more time than usual. I loved the challenge.
Time to kick back a bit, and do some drawing!

  6. You have outdone yourself, Sorceress. This gown is absolutely stunning and Charlotte will be breathtaking in it! I so hope she will be filmed performing while wearing it so that it can be shared with all of us! My goodness. Your talent knows no bounds.

    1. Yes! I hope so too, dear Thunder!
It was challenging, as I never got to fit her. I did my best, and somehow that’s good enough.
Now, if it fits within reasonable alterations, and she wears it for a performance, or photo shoot (would be great) my reward will be all the greater!
      Thank you!
I’m taking a break to draw and make curtains. Then, the Thunder gown is up on Judy! xoxoxo

    1. Thank you, Brenda!
Yes, Charlotte’s voice is special. It was easy to get inspired. Lol…took me away into an Art Gown.
Much like your Friendly Fairy Tales, a gown came out of it.
Hope you’re having a great long weekend!

  8. The gown is stunning & especially so as you recycle so many elements. I’m unfamiliar with the singer (my loss) but the gown will be a perfect fit for her beautiful soprano solos! I absolutely love what you have achieved here! My background was in the “rag” trade & so I know something of your great skill & talent. Please allow this old man to send 🤗🌹👏🙋‍♂️

    1. Thank you & Hello old man! LOL!
      I’m kinda old myself.
Thing is, you have left me a wonderful comment that hits heart.
I was in the rag trade, too. I designed my own line, made the garments in my basement and had a boutique. I never had enough $$$. So, I moved into film, where I applied my talents to bring the dreams of others into life. I had $$$ there.
Now, I’m back to doing my own designs, in a new light, for a new age and with an eye on leaving a good example for posterity.
      Cheers!

  9. Resa, I am in awe of your amazing talent! Midnight Nightingale is absolutely stunning and Charlotte will look stunning wearing it! It’s amazing how you create gorgeous gowns; it’s like fitting pieces of a puzzle together, only they’re fabric pieces.
I hope Charllote will share photos, and her voice is incredible. Gorgeous post! ❤️💐❤️🎶

    1. Thank you, Lauren!
Yeah, I hope Charlotte loves this when she sees it all finished.
More, I hope it fits! I think there is a good chance of that.
Now that you mention it, making a pattern and fitting pieces of fabric together is like a puzzle, a puzzle I enjoy.
Thank you for the reblog! That was a most welcome surprise.
Have a super Sunday and rest of the long weekend! x❤️💐❤️🎶o

Again I’m in awe of both of you.

Oh my! I found this comment, unanswered. I thought I had answered, Apologies!
Charlotte now has the gown, (she loves it) and it fits! There is a small alteration need in the back of the top, and then we will get to see her in it, performing!

In the meantime, as I made it in components, she will wear the skirt with suggested (by me) top ideas that can keep her warm while performing on drafty stages this holiday season.
Again, apologies and Thank you so much for you wonderful comment!

  21. So beautiful, Resa. I love the dragon skin and how it changed color. And it’s fascinating to hear about how you used the fabrics and the artistic choices you make to bring it together. A wonderful gown for a fabulous soprano.

I thought I had answered this, and I apologize for the tardy reply.
Anyway, I’m taking some time to catch up on comments and found this.
You’d think my brain was made of fabric…. maybe it is.
I was sorting the fabrics you sent last night into a special storage box, until I tackle the gown… sometime in the early spring.
      Well, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

PS – I will be photographing/documenting the fabrics for the post.
