Maple Moonrise is a neo-goddess; Canadian born simultaneously on the Pacific beaches of British Columbia and Atlantic shores of Prince Edward Island.
Maple Moonrise throws her beams on the all of the arts: poetry, story telling, painting, drawing, music, dance, sculpture, and more.
She decrees – Make Art not War!
It is in this spirit of arts appreciation, and a desire for Peace on Earth, that she is dedicated to Rebecca Budd.
The Making Of
It began when I opened a gift box & found 4 massive lace curtains. From the colour, fabric & finish, I’d date it mid-late 70’s.
The box arrived while I was preparing the post – La Belle Époque .
The drawing of Rebecca I was working on came to mind. The fabric was draped over it, a pic was taken and an Art Gown idea was born.
As you can see, the fabric arrived after the sketch was done, but before the colour was added.
There were 4 panels, all the same. They were 56″ wide & at the deepest points 115′ long.
As you can see from the drawing of the panels, there are no cut ends, so these pieces were custom woven.
Selvages were woven into a geometric picot.
The ends were scalloped. The scallops were scalloped. The lace is a floral repeat pattern, not overall. There’s a mesh type drop out with 3 solid lines at about the 3/4 point.
The fabric was one sided. Although the pattern showed on both sides, when light hit – one side shone, the other died.
There were several pieces of older, varying in shades of white, acetate satin & one piece of nasty modern poly satin in the stash baskets.
Those were pinned to Judy and the lace was thrown on top.
Test shots were taken.
Sometimes the lace lit like various shades of maple syrup: a light golden to dark brown to shades of reddish brown.
The fabric of 3 panels was cut across the mesh drop out.. A skirt was draped from these. The scallops were used to trim the gown’s tail.
There’s nothing like a creative mess!
The last panel was cut up for the bussell, and the picot selvage was used to trim the bodice.
The tail is asymmetric due to the shape of the last large scrap of fabric. No waste here!
The left over satin became bows.
Her self adorned beauty …
… tried a small bow.
… and a Big Bow
Then a tassel got involved.
The bows and the tassel decided to work together
One bow said to the other bow, “at least we’re not tied up in knots! Even the tassel is hanging around.”
The tassel, dangling a truth, thought;”I’m so glad they’re ribbon each other, because they just drain the colour out of everything when they tangle. !”

Lucy Maude Montgomery (1874-1941) is still inspiring 118 years after Anne of Green Gables hit the stands. Her poem was the final inspiration that pulled together the many ideas for naming Maple Moonrise.
Harbour Moonrise
There is never a wind to sing o'er the sea

Canadian L.M. Montgomery has inspired people all over the world. I just read a book in which the main character, an Australian woman, loves Anne of Green Gables, and it’s one of my favorite books, too.

A story where a woman in it loves Anne of Green Gables; now that is interesting. LMM really captured the flavour of a very specific time and place. People love it, want to see it, be there. There is a Green Gables Heritage Park in PEI, where one can get a taste.
First book I ever borrowed from a library was Anne of Green Gables. Hooray for books and libraries!

I had a historian friend, born in Canada, and we first bonded over Anne of Green Gables. For some reason, we had three of the Anne books in my house growing up. Maybe they were my big sister’s books, but I stole them haha. I did borrow some of the others in the series from the library later.

Maybe that’s a thing? My younger sister stole my clothes. The final straw was one night while watching TV in our home ( a dump by the river, with rats), I saw my best shirt (I earned the money to buy it) fall by the window. Sis had thrown it out the bedroom window, to wear to a party.
I was waiting for her, when she came for it. LOL – we fought a lot!
She was 7 1/2 years older than me, so she had good books. Hahaha. We had a house full of books, so I took books from all over the house. Hahaha
My younger sister and I shared a lot of clothes. I’m glad we didn’t fight very much. And my kids and I used to borrow clothing and jewelry from each other when they were in high school. I couldn’t wear their pants though because they were taller than me!

The only books we had were my mom’s, mostly Harold Robbins(The Carpetbaggers, etc.) . She hid them in a closet. I was not allowed, but I would sneak them.
Maybe you and your sister didn’t fight much because of the years difference. Jacquie and I are 18 months apart. We almost killed each other in out teens.

That’s sad to grow up in a house with so few books. I imagine it’s very common. We also had two sets of encyclopedia, a set of American Heritage books, a big dictionary, and art books, as well as novels. (My dad also got a sci-fi magazine, and I used to read it, so he got me my own subscription when I was in 6th grade maybe?)
It was my little sister I didn’t fight with that I remember. I’m sure we had little kid fights. We’re not quite two years apart. Yes, my older sister was so much older. I don’t know if we fought exactly, but she caused a lot of disruption in the family. Too much to go into here. 😊

It was a giant copper plate with the classic image of dogs playing poker hammered into it. OMG… the copper is worth something now, anyway. Actually it s so outrageously kitsch, that I wouldn’t ming having it now, for a laugh!

Finally… it’s been awhile since the last Art Gown. I love what one can do with trash/repurposing. It is the most modern of art forms. If we don’t start being more creative with our trash, it will bury us.

Yes… the backlight brings out the lace design. I am a total amateur with a camera, but I do try things. Next diaphanous lacie gown I will be a bit better at it.

Oh, well done, Resa! This is one of my favorites. The brownish tones in the lace over the creamy satin gives an antique feeling. And the lines of the bodice feel Art Deco. I imagine an elegant 1920s party. Congratulations on crafting this beauty and kudos to Rebecca too. What a splendid gown! Hugs on the wing.

For some reason I wanted to put it over a gold satin, but no gold satin found its way to me. I’m thrilled with the white.

Gowns can be dreamy to look at, like much art.
I started doing the explanation because people did not seem to understand what goes into making the gowns.
The techniques needed to make them are dying crafts. Perhaps I will inspire someone to learn to sew, and make things… or at least repair a shirt or dress instead of throwing it away.
I actually know people who cannot sew on a button. Then again, I can’t hammer a nail in straight. I can hammer my thumb quite nicely, though.
STUPID wars and the the idiots who engage in them, or force others to defend themselves when it is perpetrated on them. What a waste of a short time on earth.
Anyway, I’m promoting art, not war. Art in all it’s forms. Love ya!~

Yes, I have worn one of my gowns, on occasion.
Lol… men are not clamouring at my feet, when I wear a gown. Perhaps romantic notion is lacking from our landscape?
However, I am trying to get others, who have a public persona (ie movie stars) to wear them.
As my Art Gowns are all made from re-using what already exists, I want to show that we don’t need brand new to create wonder and beauty, to promote sustainability.
I should try harder on that front, I will!
When it comes to business, I want to escape by making another gown, or drawing or going to the art gallery.

Ahh how my mind works… now that is insightful of you. We all have much we can learn from each other. I hope I said that right.
I know gowns are impractical, but I guess thats part of why they are so mesmerizing to look at when they are artistic.
Sometimes I get a tad envious when I see a masterpiece by a famous/wealthy designer who has spent a years wage on the finest silks and crystals and whatever. But I know my girls are as beautiful in their own way, and I used cast off fabrics and old clothes…etc. SO.. there is an honour in that.

I do love making these gowns. It’s a passion that got paused somehow in Jan. 2024. Hmmm? Then art gown design overreach, (that one is going to be a gown inspired plastics trash sculpture) then my Art Show… now, I am back in the saddle, with normal Art Gowns..
I’ve even started drawing my AGM’s again, albeit a bit rusty.

A gown well worth the “wait,” Resa. Since I am one who can’t sew a button, I do appreciate seeing the entire process involved in putting a work like this together. I love how you brought the bows and tassel to life with their comments and thoughts. They worked together beautifully, part of a very beautiful creation.
